Engineering Beyond Boundaries

Drew Endy (Th’ 98) helped start the newest engineering major, bioengineering, at both MIT and Stanford.  His research teams pioneered the redesign of genomes and invented the transcriptor, a simple DNA element that allows living cells to implement Boolean logic.  In 2013 President Obama recognized Endy for his work with the BioBricks Foundation to bootstrap a free-to-use language for programming life.  He has been working with designers, social scientists, and others to transcend the industrialization of nature, recently co-authoring Synthetic Aesthetics (MIT Press, 2014).  Drew is also a co-founder and director of Gen9, Inc., a DNA construction company.

Event Hosted By
Dartmouth Society of Engineers
An Association of Alumni, Friends, and Students of Thayer School

The Dartmouth Society of Engineers (DSE) is comprised of students, alumni, and friends of Thayer School. The DSE supports academic, professional, philanthropic, and social activities at the school and is divided into two chapters: the Parent Chapter (of alumni and friends of Thayer) and the Student Chapter (engineering students).

The Student Chapter serves as a forum for matters pertaining to the welfare of engineering students at Dartmouth, as well as a liaison between the engineering student body and the DSE Parent Chapter, Thayer School faculty and staff, and Dartmouth College.

This Student Chapter initiatives included:
- Strengthening the bond between current Thayer students and alumni
- Getting more students involved in the Thayer community
- Enhancing the academic role of the student chapter
- Maintaining the high level of philanthropic services performed by Thayer students

We believe that we, as a group, and Thayer, as a whole, have a lot to celebrate this year!
